Honus Wagner Card Sold for $826,000

A T206 Honus Wagner card was part of  Philip Weiss Auctions sale the weekend of Nov.22.

The card, not known to have been publicly sold in the past, was graded SGC 40 and sold for $700,000.  With the company buyer premium of 18 percent added, the final realized price was $826,000.

The Wagner card was the high profile item in a large auction of vintage sports cards and memorabilia.

The winning bidder joins a legion of new Wagner card owners over the last year.  A PSA 5 example sold over the summer to an Arkansas collector/dealer for $1.62 million by Mastro Auctions.  A poor condition Wagner brought $317,250 for Robert Edward Auctions last spring and a similar, but slightly less striking poor condition graded Wagner card sold for $227,050 in a Heritage Auctions sale at about the same time.

Less than 100 of the Wagner cards are believed to exist, perhaps as few as 50.
